Vancouver has an amazing number of venues and restaurants to host private and corporate parties, making it sometimes hard to choose. Besides the amazing variety of cuisines the city has to offer, there’s also a place for the particular ambiance you are trying to set for the evening.
A corporate client of mine was holding their first Christmas party gathering in Vancouver, and this was the first time some of their employees had met in person—a common occurrence these days with remote-first companies. They flew their staff in for the weekend from all over.
They chose The Roof at Black & Blue restaurant in downtown Vancouver, a restaurant known for its steak dining experience, as you can rent different parts of the restaurant for private parties. In this case, they took over the entire rooftop patio for their private corporate party, an excellent space for such an event.
Besides the great meat options they offer, the rooftop open-air setting with its warm fireplace extending along both walls of the patio is notable. Not only does it warm up the patio, but it also provides some very interesting lighting for photos.
For this event, I decided to let some of the venue’s character come through in the photos, so I shot more ambient-type photos than I typically would, letting the restaurant’s natural light do some of the work (which can be really hard for dark venues, hence why I always carry flashes as well).
