I’m frequently approached for engagement or wedding shoots at the iconic Capilano Suspension Bridge in North Vancouver. These requests, whether from Vancouver visitors or locals seeking the perfect location for surprise engagement photos, often lead to discussions about the intricacies of planning such a surprise.
While Capilano Bridge is popular (mainly because it’s a tourist attraction), complete with its picturesque surroundings, orchestrating a surprise proposal there can be quite the feat. With no way to make a reservations (as of 2023), the need to arrive early, be first in-line, and the ever-present crowds, it’s a location that demands careful consideration.
Lynn Canyon – A Vancouver Favourite
Enter Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge – a true hidden gem nestled in the heart of North Vancouver’s Lynn Valley. This tranquil haven, favoured by locals for its understated charm, offers a serene escape from the bustle of city life. Tucked away just a short drive from Capilano Bridge, Lynn Canyon (AllTrails map) is a backyard oasis waiting to be explored.
With multiple entrances and a variety of trails winding through the valley, Lynn Canyon caters to all levels of adventurers. Whether you’re seeking a leisurely stroll amidst nature or a more challenging hike (walk), there’s a path for you (you can walk a flat route or descend 350 feet into the canyon). And with its lush surroundings, including a pristine freshwater stream, a tranquil 30-foot pool, and majestic twin falls, the opportunities for capturing breathtaking photos are boundless. My suggestion for ease of access is to enter from the west side of the park by the coffee shop (I wouldn’t suggest the coffee here) where’s there’s usually plenty of parking.
Having hiked (it’s more of a hard walk) these trails countless times, I recently had the pleasure of utilizing Lynn Canyon as the backdrop for a surprise engagement shoot. The couple’s desire for a forest setting reminiscent of the West Coast of the US was perfectly fulfilled amidst Lynn Valley’s lush green beauty. Of course, being in Vancouver, the weather can be unpredictable, so rain is always a possibility – a factor to keep in mind when planning your shoot.
